While the staff and many of our customers enjoy Elixir Strings, there are reasons why choosing a coated string may be right for you- and there are options outside the Elixir brand for folks who want a long lasting, great sounding string that might not necessarily want to buy Elixirs. D’Addario has a great set of EXP strings for acoustics and electrics and they are also quite excellent!

The basic scoop is this: different materials are used to coat the string to prevent oxidization to occur in the metals too early. This coating material also prevents “gunk” i.e. dead skin, oil, etc from getting in between the coils of the strings, making them go dead faster. Pick up a set if you’ve never tried them before and see for yourself!
